Lexington, KY – Heavy rain has triggered flash flooding across parts of central Kentucky this afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville to issue a Flood Warning for Fayette, Clark, and Bourbon counties until 7 p.m. EDT Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar detected 3 to 4 inches of rainfall in the affected area as of 3:52 p.m., with additional rain of up to 1.5 inches possible before the system clears later this evening.
The warning covers several communities including Winchester, Paris, North Middletown, Pretty Run, and Stony Point, where flooding of creeks, streams, and low-lying roads is either occurring or expected imminently.
Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and remember the safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.” The NWS reports that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles attempting to cross water-covered roads.
Residents in the affected counties should monitor weather alerts and local media updates through the evening as additional rainfall could worsen conditions in flood-prone areas.
