Dodge City, KS – Residents across much of Kansas are being warned to prepare for severe thunderstorms tonight, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall all possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms are expected to first develop around sunset across northeastern Colorado and northwestern Kansas before spreading eastward through the late evening hours. Forecasters warn that some hail could reach golf ball size, and wind gusts may exceed 65 mph.
The greatest risk tonight covers southwest, central, and south-central Kansas, including Dodge City, Garden City, and Hutchinson. While the severe threat remains widespread, the agency noted that more isolated but intense storms could also form, increasing the danger of sudden wind damage or large hail impacts.
In addition to severe thunderstorms, there is also a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall leading to flash flooding in low-lying areas. Residents in flood-prone locations are urged to monitor conditions closely and be prepared for rapidly changing weather after dark.
The National Weather Service advises keeping weather alerts turned on, securing outdoor items that could be blown away, and having a safe place to shelter in case warnings are issued tonight.
This storm system is expected to move out of Kansas by early Tuesday morning, but forecasters caution that damaging weather could persist late into the night.
