WICHITA, Kan. – Drivers across Central and South Central Kansas could face dangerous flooding today as heavy rain lingers into Tuesday afternoon. Low-lying roads, including portions of I-35 and nearby county highways, may quickly flood, forcing closures and delays during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Flood Watch remains in effect through 1 p.m. Tuesday for Wichita, El Dorado, Hutchinson, and surrounding counties. Excessive rainfall may overwhelm storm drains and send creeks out of their banks. Officials urge drivers to avoid high water, warning that just two feet of moving floodwater can sweep vehicles off roads.

The heaviest storms shift east by late Tuesday, easing flood concerns but keeping showers in the region through Wednesday morning. Strong storms are not expected midweek, but wet roads may still cause slick conditions. Residents should monitor alerts in case isolated warnings are issued for flash flooding.

By Thursday, drier air finally arrives, bringing sunshine and a stretch of calmer weather. Afternoon highs climb into the mid-70s Thursday before warming closer to 80 degrees this weekend. Early fall conditions should hold steady into next week, offering a welcome break from the unsettled stretch.

More updates are expected if rainfall totals exceed current projections. Flood Watches could expand if additional storms redevelop.
