Wichita, KS – Much of Kansas is on alert for potential flooding as heavy rainfall is expected to move through the state starting this afternoon. A widespread flood watch will be in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon, impacting dozens of counties in central, south-central, southeast, and northeast Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service, excessive rainfall may lead to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. The watch covers a significant portion of the state, including the cities of Wichita, Salina, Topeka, Hutchinson, Manhattan, and Emporia.
The watch area includes Barton, Sedgwick, Shawnee, and Reno counties, among many others. Residents in these regions, especially those living near waterways, should be prepared for rising water levels. Impacts could disrupt travel and daily routines across the affected areas.
Officials urge residents to monitor forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Now is the time for those in historically flood-prone areas to review their preparedness plans and be ready to take action should conditions worsen. The watch remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon.
