Wichita, Kansas – Triple-digit heat and sweltering humidity will keep much of Central and South Central Kansas on high alert through Friday evening as the National Weather Service continues heat advisories for Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, and surrounding cities.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, heat index values will reach up to 107 degrees through 8 p.m. Thursday, with an even more intense wave of up to 108 degrees expected between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday. Advisories cover a broad region including Russell, Saline, Reno, Sedgwick, Kingman, McPherson, and more, stretching into Southeast Kansas cities like Winfield, El Dorado, Parsons, and Coffeyville.

Residents are urged to take extreme precautions: limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activities, stay hydrated, and check in on vulnerable neighbors or relatives. Local health agencies warn that heat-related illnesses can develop rapidly, especially for those without access to air conditioning or proper hydration.

Major roads and public spaces will be exposed to excessive heat, and public cooling centers may be available in some communities. If you must be outside, wear light clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade.

Advisories remain in effect through 8 p.m. Friday, with continued updates possible if dangerous heat persists. Stay tuned to local news and weather alerts for any changes or new warnings.
