WICHITA, Kan. – A Freeze Warning is in effect across central and south-central Kansas as temperatures are expected to plummet to near 30 degrees overnight, posing risks to crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the warning runs from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday, covering counties including Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Reno, Harvey, Kingman, Sedgwick, Harper, and Sumner. Sub-freezing air will settle across the region early Thursday morning before gradually moderating by midday.

The NWS warns that frost and freeze conditions could damage late-season vegetation and unprotected pipes. Homeowners are urged to bring potted plants indoors, cover tender outdoor vegetation, and allow faucets to drip slightly to prevent freezing.

Drivers may also encounter slick spots early Thursday, especially on bridges and shaded roads. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts for potential follow-up advisories as colder air lingers into the weekend.

Warnings remain in effect through Thursday morning.
