Hutchinson, Kan. – Rising water along Cow Creek is expected to push parts of Reno and Rice counties into minor flooding by late tonight, with the National Weather Service warning of road closures and dangerous travel conditions through Saturday afternoon.
According to NWS Wichita, Cow Creek near Hutchinson was measured at 9.2 feet Wednesday afternoon, just shy of the 9.5-foot flood stage. The river is forecast to climb past that threshold after midnight, cresting at 10.2 feet early Friday before slowly receding below flood stage by Saturday morning.
Flooding is likely to impact Wilson Road between 69th and 82nd avenues, where the low-water crossing is expected to be submerged. Water depths could reach four inches with a span of up to five feet, creating hazardous conditions for vehicles. Officials urge drivers not to attempt travel through flooded areas, as as little as two feet of moving water can sweep cars away.
Residents are advised to monitor updates and avoid flood-prone routes overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if water levels rise more than currently projected.
Warnings remain in effect for Reno and Rice counties until Saturday afternoon.
