Iowa — Flags snap hard and loose snow skitters across parking lots this morning as winter ramps up across central Iowa. The air feels sharp already, but the most disruptive conditions are still lining up through tonight and into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory is in effect for Des Moines and much of central Iowa from mid-afternoon through late evening. West to northwest winds increase to 25–30 mph, with gusts reaching 45 mph. These winds may blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles on I-80, I-35, and open rural highways.

Light snow develops at times this afternoon and evening. Accumulations stay limited, generally up to 2 inches, but blowing snow could briefly reduce visibility. Travel may become tricky during bursts of snow combined with strong winds, even where totals remain low.

Behind the wind comes the bigger concern. An Extreme Cold Watch takes effect late Thursday night and continues through Saturday morning. Temperatures plunge well below zero, and dangerous wind chills may fall as low as 30 degrees below zero. Frostbite could occur on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes. Residents should limit time outdoors and dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings.

Friday looks brutally cold, with daytime highs struggling to reach the single digits. Winds ease slightly, but the cold lingers into Saturday morning. Any snow that falls will stick quickly, increasing the risk of icy roads and flash freezing where melting occurs during brief daytime warming.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps Iowa below normal as January closes out. While the cold eases slowly next week, winter systems remain active across the central U.S.
