Des Moines, IA —Strong winds and spring storms are battering central Iowa today, causing travel disruptions and heightened safety risks across the Des Moines metro area. Gusts up to 45 mph are expected through 7 p.m., and residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid high-profile vehicles on major roadways, especially along I-35.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday for much of central Iowa. Winds from the southwest are sustaining speeds of 20 to 30 mph, with stronger gusts likely. Scattered thunderstorms and light rain are expected during the morning hours, tapering off by the afternoon.

Storms earlier in the day brought brief downpours and thunder, but severe activity remains limited. Still, loose debris and falling tree limbs may cause brief power outages and road hazards.

Looking ahead, Thursday brings a calm break with mostly sunny skies and a high near 57°F. However, more spring weather returns Friday with a 40% chance of afternoon rain and continued cloud cover. Saturday will stay breezy with another round of showers, but Sunday and Monday are expected to clear, offering sunny skies and highs in the low 50s.

Five-Day Spring Weather Outlook:

  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, high near 57°F
  • Friday: 40% chance of rain, high 56°F
  • Saturday: Breezy with rain chance, high 52°F
  • Sunday: Mostly clear, high near 50°F
  • Monday: Sunny, high near 59°F

Motorists and residents should remain cautious and monitor updates from local emergency officials and the National Weather Service.
