Des Moines, Iowa – Funnel clouds and gusty winds could impact central Iowa Thursday evening as collapsing storms threaten areas from Des Moines to Ottumwa.

According to the National Weather Service, atmospheric conditions may support brief, low-hanging funnel clouds through 5 p.m. Friday, particularly across central and southern Iowa. While rarely becoming tornadoes, these clouds can startle drivers and damage unsecured items. Gusty winds are also possible, with spotter activation likely in northern counties.

Residents from Polk to Appanoose counties should prepare for Thursday afternoon storms that could develop quickly. Cities like Perry, Knoxville, Newton, and Indianola may see brief downpours, wind gusts near 40 mph, and swirling funnel clouds. Secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for any tornado warnings. If you see a funnel, report it immediately to the NWS.

While Friday turns partly sunny by evening, isolated thunderstorm chances return Sunday afternoon and again Monday and Tuesday. No widespread severe weather is expected at this time, but the risk of stronger storms increases next week.

Travelers for Father’s Day weekend should plan for sunny skies on Saturday, but carry rain gear for Sunday.

Storm chances continue into Tuesday, with better clarity expected by Sunday night. Updates will follow as conditions evolve.
