Des Moines, Iowa – Crisp fall air tightens its grip across Iowa this week as strong winds and plunging temperatures signal the first cold snap of the season. Wind gusts near 40 mph could sweep across I-80 by Tuesday morning, making for tough driving and scattered delays on open stretches.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, conditions remain sunny and breezy today, with highs reaching 70°F by late afternoon. But a sharp drop begins Tuesday as a stronger system moves in, bringing northwest wind gusts up to 37 mph and highs barely touching 57°F. That’s a more than 10-degree drop from Monday — a shift drivers and homeowners alike should prepare for.

The most significant impacts will be felt Tuesday into Wednesday morning, especially for anyone commuting early or working outdoors. Wind chills could dip into the low 30s before sunrise Wednesday. Rural areas and exposed roadways, including stretches of I-35 and US-69, may feel the brunt of the gusts. Secure any lightweight Halloween decorations or outdoor items now to avoid damage.

Despite the gusty chill, skies stay mostly clear through midweek. No precipitation is expected, but the pattern hints at a winter setup by next weekend, with models beginning to show the first hints of colder rain or early flakes around the 25th.
