Des Moines, IA – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of central and northern Iowa from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, as powerful winds and blowing snow could create blizzard conditions and life-threatening travel, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
Forecasters warn that wind gusts over 50 mph will develop Tuesday evening, lasting into Wednesday morning. Although little new snow is expected, the existing 6-inch snowpack across the region is likely to erode and lift easily, producing significant blowing and drifting that may lead to whiteout conditions and zero visibility at times.
The greatest impacts are expected along Interstates 35 and 80, with bridges and overpasses becoming slick and hazardous overnight. The Wednesday morning commute could see near-impossible driving conditions as strong winds whip across open areas.
Counties under the watch include Polk, Story, Webster, Black Hawk, Boone, and Carroll, among many others. Meteorologists advise residents to delay travel, secure outdoor items, and stay alert for upgraded Blizzard Warnings if conditions worsen.
