Ames, Iowa – Strong storms are tracking across central and north-central Iowa Friday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 21 counties until 5 p.m. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail larger than quarters are the primary threats, with heavy downpours reducing visibility along major highways.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch covers areas from Boone and Story counties east to Marshall, and north to Kossuth, Hancock, and Winnebago counties. Residents in Ames, Fort Dodge, and Mason City should monitor rapidly changing conditions, as storms could intensify through the afternoon.
Travelers along I-35 and U.S. Highway 20 should watch for sudden wind shifts, fallen branches, and water pooling on roads. Outdoor events and construction work may need to pause until storms pass. The NWS advises moving indoors at the first sign of lightning and securing loose outdoor items.
Thunderstorms are expected to weaken by early evening, but additional storm chances remain possible this weekend. Warnings may be issued if cells become severe.
