Des Moines, IA – A winter weather advisory will bring slick roads, icy conditions, and potential power outages to central Iowa this weekend. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, takes effect Friday at 4 p.m. and remains in place through Saturday at 9 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will include light snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch expected. Winds between 10 and 20 mph may exacerbate conditions, potentially leading to fallen tree limbs and scattered power outages. Officials urge residents to drive cautiously, especially during Friday evening’s commute, as icy bridges and overpasses could become treacherous.
Saturday morning travelers should prepare for slick roadways and monitor updated travel conditions via the Iowa 511 app or website. Residents are also encouraged to keep flashlights and extra supplies handy in case of outages.
The five-day forecast shows improving conditions after the storm moves through Saturday afternoon. Sunday brings partly cloudy skies and a high near 40°F, with dry weather expected early next week. However, lingering icy patches may remain in shaded areas through the weekend.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speeds, leave extra space between vehicles, and avoid travel during peak icing hours if possible. Updates on power restoration efforts and storm impacts will be provided as conditions evolve.
