INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Central Indiana is bracing for its first widespread frost and potential freeze of the season as temperatures plunge into the low 30s through the end of the week, threatening sensitive outdoor plants and late-season crops.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, frost is likely each night from Wednesday through Friday, with the coldest stretch expected Thursday night into Friday morning when lows may reach 30°F in rural and low-lying areas. The agency warns that widespread frost and localized freezing temperatures could damage unprotected vegetation and signal the end of the growing season across much of the state.

Counties along and north of I-70, including Boone, Hamilton, Madison, and Hancock, face the highest chance for subfreezing temperatures. Lighter winds and clear skies will favor radiational cooling, allowing temperatures to dip rapidly after sunset. The NWS advises residents to bring potted plants indoors, cover tender garden vegetation, and disconnect outdoor hoses to prevent pipe damage.

Agricultural operators are urged to monitor conditions closely, as even a brief freeze could impact late-harvest produce and ornamental landscaping. Commuters should also plan for frosty windshields and patchy morning fog in sheltered valleys.

A gradual warming trend is expected this weekend as southerly breezes return, pushing afternoon highs back into the 60s by Sunday.
