Indianapolis, Ind. – After weeks of unusually dry conditions, Indiana is bracing for a wet stretch as widespread rainfall and thunderstorms return beginning late Sunday night. Drivers could face slick roads and ponding water during the Monday morning commute, with rain chances climbing near 90 percent statewide.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the heaviest rain is expected from early Monday morning through the afternoon. The wet weather may bring localized flooding in low-lying and urban areas, especially along I-465 and major city routes where storm drains could quickly clog.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue off and on through Tuesday, with rain chances still above 50 percent into Tuesday night. Additional heavy rounds are likely Wednesday into Thursday, keeping the risk of flash flooding elevated for much of central and southern Indiana.
Residents are urged to allow extra travel time, avoid driving through standing water, and keep electronic devices charged in case of storm-related power outages. Outdoor activities may need to be rescheduled as lightning remains a risk through midweek.
Another update from the National Weather Service is expected Monday as the storm system evolves.
