INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – A crisp, silvery chill clings to lawns and car windshields early this Thursday, the surest sign yet that fall’s grip is tightening. By early Friday, the chill turns biting as a Freeze Warning takes hold across central Indiana, ending the growing season for many counties from Boone to Bartholomew. Lows are expected to plunge into the upper 20s and low 30s, cold enough to damage unprotected plants and outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, frost will linger this morning under calm skies before a stronger push of Arctic air arrives Thursday night into Friday. That drop will bring widespread sub-freezing temperatures, marking the area’s first true cold snap of the season. Residents should cover garden plants, disconnect hoses, and protect outdoor pets and sensitive pipes before temperatures bottom out around dawn Friday.

Friday’s sunshine will do little to warm things quickly, with highs near 59°F under clear skies and light northwest breezes. The weekend, however, offers a steady recovery — Saturday and Sunday will trend milder, reaching the low 60s with mostly sunny skies and calm winds, ideal for outdoor cleanup or early Halloween decorating.

This front signals a larger shift across the Midwest. From Iowa to Virginia, nearly a dozen states are poised to see their first widespread freezes by Friday morning, drawing a clear line between fall and the coming winter chill. Though no snow is in sight yet for Indiana, the seasonal transition is unmistakable — clear, cold mornings and the subtle scent of wood smoke marking October’s slow turn toward winter.
