Indianapolis, IN – After a warm and quiet start to the weekend, the threat for strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to return to central Indiana by Sunday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says temperatures will surge into the low 80s Sunday, along with increasing humidity—setting the stage for storm development as a cold front moves into the region.

The main threats with any storms that form will be large hail and damaging wind gusts.

Forecasters note that this is a conditional severe threat, meaning storms will depend on how much instability and moisture can build ahead of the front. If storms do develop, they are most likely later in the day and into the evening hours.

The greatest risk area may shift north or south depending on how the system evolves, so residents across central Indiana—including Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Bloomington—should stay alert for updates.

Even outside of severe storms, lightning and brief heavy rain will be possible.

Residents are encouraged to review severe weather safety plans and have multiple ways to receive warnings heading into Sunday.
