Indianapolis, IN – Trees sway, traffic lights rock, and flags whip under gusty 40 mph winds sweeping across central Indiana this morning. The blustery air is just the start of a winter weather transition, with snow on the way and some of the coldest temperatures of the season arriving by the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, winds will stay strong through the afternoon, with isolated gusts reaching 45 mph. Light rain will mix with snow by evening, coating roads and grassy areas with a thin, slushy layer. Drivers should use caution on I-70 and I-65, where visibility could drop quickly as precipitation changes over.
By Thursday night, a fast-moving system will deliver accumulating snow, especially north and west of the metro area. Some neighborhoods could pick up 1–2 inches before Friday morning’s commute. More flurries may follow Friday night into Saturday, as Arctic air deepens and wind chills dip to -10°F or lower.
Meteorologists warn that this pattern marks the start of a true December cold snap, with temperatures struggling to climb out of the 20s through early next week. Any leftover slush will refreeze, creating slick spots on bridges and sidewalks.
