Indianapolis, Indiana – Skies over central Indiana could turn hazy and golden by Friday afternoon as wildfire smoke from Canada moves into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, elevated levels of smoke will arrive by late morning Friday, with the heaviest concentrations expected into the evening hours. The smoke isn’t anticipated to significantly impact air quality at the surface but could reduce visibility and create a washed-out appearance in the sky.
Communities from Lafayette to Fort Wayne and down through Indianapolis and Bloomington may notice a milky haze, especially during the late afternoon. The smoke could also enhance sunset colors, with deeper reds and oranges possible as the sun dips below the horizon.
Residents with respiratory conditions should stay informed, even though surface-level effects are expected to be minimal. Outdoor events can continue as planned, but those sensitive to air changes might consider limiting extended exposure.
The smoke pattern is expected to thin out late Friday night into Saturday morning. NWS will continue monitoring the plume’s movement and issue updates if any health or visibility concerns develop.
