Indiana – Bitter cold cuts through central Indiana this morning, stinging exposed skin within minutes and leaving sidewalks creaking under frozen boots. Car engines strain, breath hangs thick, and even short trips outside feel punishing.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through midmorning as wind chills plunge between 10 and 19 degrees below zero. The advisory covers much of central Indiana, including Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks, Boone, Johnson, and surrounding counties.
In Indianapolis, temperatures hover near 3 degrees, but a light breeze drives wind chills closer to minus 15. Streets remain dry, yet the cold itself poses the biggest hazard. Drivers along I-65, I-70, and I-465 face reduced reaction times as vehicles take longer to warm. Walking pets or waiting for buses becomes risky without proper protection.
The extreme cold lingers through the day. Afternoon highs struggle to reach the mid-teens, offering little relief. Tonight stays frigid, with lows dipping near zero again. Friday improves only slightly, with highs still stuck in the teens and subzero wind chills returning by morning.
Saturday brings a small change. Clouds increase, and a slight chance for flurries develops, though accumulation remains minimal. Temperatures remain locked in the teens before a modest warm-up arrives Sunday, when highs reach the lower 20s. Even then, winter maintains control heading into early next week, with periodic snow chances returning.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin. Check on neighbors, especially the elderly, and ensure pets stay inside. Conditions may remain dangerous during early hours for several more days.
