Indianapolis, Indiana – A round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to move across central Indiana this evening, with a few storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis said storms are forecast to develop late this afternoon and evening as a line of showers moves east from Illinois into Indiana. The most likely window for stronger storms is between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.

Central Indiana is under a marginal risk for severe weather, meaning isolated severe thunderstorms are possible. Forecasters said the primary threat will be damaging straight-line winds. Gusty winds of 50 mph are already expected outside of thunderstorms, and the strongest storms could produce wind gusts exceeding 60 mph.

While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, any storm that intensifies could cause localized damage, including downed tree limbs and power lines. Brief heavy rainfall and lightning are also expected with the stronger cells. Tornado risk appears low, but conditions will be monitored closely as storms move through the region.

The National Weather Service noted that wind gusts could increase rapidly as storms pass, even in areas that experience only light rainfall. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and remain indoors during thunderstorms when possible.

Travelers should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility and slick roadways during heavier downpours. Evening commuters, including students and young workers returning home, may encounter rapidly changing conditions during peak travel hours.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including weather radios, mobile alerts, and local media. Conditions may change quickly, and warnings could be issued with little notice if storms intensify.
