Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers across central Indiana faced dangerous conditions Wednesday morning as flash flooding swamped low-lying roads in Indianapolis, Carmel, and Greenwood.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:30 a.m. EDT for Marion, Hamilton, and Johnson counties. Doppler radar showed 1 to 2.25 inches of rain had already fallen by 8:25 a.m., with another 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible as storms continue to move through the area.
Flooding is already impacting construction zones and underpasses in Franklin, Westfield, Noblesville, and Beech Grove. Local officials warn that creeks and streams are quickly rising, especially near Southport, Cumberland, and Bargersville. Commuters are urged to avoid water-covered roads and seek alternate routes when necessary.
To stay safe, residents should avoid driving through standing water and keep phones charged in case of power disruptions. If flooding worsens, emergency alerts may be issued through local media and weather apps.
The flood warning is set to expire late Wednesday morning, but more rain could trigger additional alerts. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service.
