Indianapolis, IN – The first flakes of the season are on the way for parts of central Indiana Sunday night as colder air sweeps into the region, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

Forecasters say rain will transition to snow late Sunday into early Monday, with the highest chance for accumulation in areas north of Indianapolis — including Kokomo and Muncie — where a light coating to around an inch could occur on grassy and elevated surfaces.

While snow totals are expected to remain light, temperatures will drop sharply Sunday night, dipping into the 20s with wind chills falling into the teens. Any wet roads or untreated surfaces could freeze, leading to slick spots for the Monday morning commute.

The National Weather Service advises residents to prepare for the first winter-like night of the season by disconnecting outdoor hoses and checking home heating systems.

Warmer conditions aren’t expected to return until midweek, as Monday’s highs will struggle to reach the mid-30s.
