Indianapolis, Ind. – Snow will begin coating untreated roads across central and southern Indiana by 2 a.m. Monday, setting up slick travel conditions before most drivers head out the door.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. EST Monday for Vigo, Clay, Owen, Monroe, Brown, Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson and Jennings counties. Forecasters expect light snow, occasionally mixed with sleet, with total accumulations between 1 and 2 inches.
The highest impacts are likely along I-70 near Terre Haute, State Road 46 through Bloomington and Nashville, and U.S. 31 near Columbus and Seymour. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, especially where pavement temperatures drop below freezing before sunrise. Rural routes near Spencer, Gosport and North Vernon could remain snow-covered through the morning drive.
INDOT crews are expected to pretreat major highways, but untreated secondary roads may turn slick quickly. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions.
Snow should taper off by mid-morning Monday, but lingering slick spots may persist until temperatures climb above freezing. Additional advisories could follow if bands produce heavier bursts before daybreak.
