Indianapolis, IN – A blanket of light snow continues to drift across central Indiana this morning, with a larger, steadier band expected to arrive by late afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for most of the state, calling for 2 to 4 inches of snow and rapidly deteriorating travel conditions from Thursday evening through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Friday, affecting much of central and southern Indiana, including Bloomington, Lafayette, and Indianapolis. Forecasters say commuters should expect slick roads and reduced visibility, particularly during the Friday morning drive.
“Plan for slippery conditions,” the agency warned, noting that even brief bursts of heavier snow could create near-whiteout visibility on highways like I-65 and I-70 during peak travel times. Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights, and allow extra braking distance as temperatures dip below freezing overnight.
Behind this system, colder air will surge south, locking in the coldest stretch of the season so far. Highs on Saturday are forecast near 22°F, with lows dipping into the single digits by Sunday morning. Additional snow showers could return over the weekend, especially near the Illinois–Indiana border and lake-effect regions north of Lafayette.
Early models also suggest that a reinforcing cold front could send another burst of arctic air into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley by early next week, keeping highs 15–20 degrees below normal through Wednesday.
Five-Day Outlook:
- Friday: Morning snow, high 34°F, breezy.
- Saturday: Chance of snow, high 22°F, windy.
- Sunday: Clear but bitter cold, high 9°F.
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 29°F.
- Tuesday: Partly cloudy, high near 40°F.
