Indianapolis, IN – Another stretch of hot, dry weather is setting up across Indiana this week, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning that drought conditions could worsen.

According to the NWS Indianapolis office, highs are expected to range from the mid-80s to low 90s through at least Wednesday, September 17. Overnight lows will stay in the upper 50s to mid-60s, offering little relief from the heat. Minimum relative humidity values will dip below 35 percent, raising concerns about fire danger and water stress.

Forecasters noted that while Sunday provided brief relief, the dry pattern has returned. The NWS is encouraging residents to check the U.S. Drought Monitor for the latest updates and to be aware of any county-level burn bans that may be in effect.

“Another hot and dry week is in the forecast with highs approaching 90 degrees,” the agency said in a social media post Sunday.

Safety reminders include heeding fire restrictions, avoiding open flames, staying hydrated, and watering plants to protect against the heat.

Officials caution that even small sparks could quickly spread in the dry conditions, especially with relative humidity falling near 30 percent during the afternoon hours.

Residents across Indianapolis, Marion County, and surrounding central Indiana counties are urged to prepare for the continued stretch of abnormally dry weather and take precautions to reduce fire risks.
