Indianapolis, IN — A powerful system is poised to drench central Indiana starting Wednesday evening, bringing heavy rain, strong storms, and flood concerns just as April begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Watch remains in effect from Wednesday evening through Sunday morning. Flash flooding and river flooding are both likely, especially late in the week as wave after wave of moisture moves through the region.

Cities across central Indiana — including Indianapolis, Muncie, Bloomington, and Carmel — should prepare for significant rainfall totals, with 100% chance of thunderstorms Wednesday night. Lightning, small hail, and gusts up to 39 mph are possible. Travel may be hazardous, especially on U.S. 31, I-70, and other low-lying routes.

Flash flood safety tips:

  • Avoid driving through flooded roads — “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car.
  • Sign up for local weather alerts via smartphone apps or NOAA radios.
