Indianapolis, Indiana – Water is already pooling on roads across central Indiana after 2 to 4 inches of rain fell overnight, and another 1 to 3 inches could push creeks out of their banks before the Thursday morning commute. Drivers in Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Bloomington should expect ponding on interstates and neighborhood streets through daybreak.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning for much of central, west-central and south-central Indiana, including Marion, Hendricks, Johnson, Monroe, Vigo and Bartholomew counties. Soils are saturated from last night’s heavy rainfall, and additional rounds of rain are expected to redevelop tonight.
Area waterways, including tributaries feeding the White River and Wabash River, are already running high. Urban areas such as downtown Indianapolis, Greenwood and Plainfield could see rapid runoff overwhelm storm drains if heavier bands set up overhead.
Residents should monitor local alerts and prepare for possible Flood Warnings overnight. Avoid driving through water-covered roads, especially in low-lying underpasses and rural crossings. The flood threat will remain elevated until rain tapers off later Thursday morning, and additional advisories may be issued if rainfall totals trend higher.
