Indianapolis, IN – An elevated fire risk is in effect across central and western Indiana this afternoon due to strong winds and low humidity, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis.

The NWS warns that south winds gusting between 30 and 35 mph, combined with dry vegetation and low relative humidity, will create conditions favorable for the rapid spread of fires. Areas affected include Indianapolis, Lafayette, Bloomington, Muncie, and Terre Haute, among others.

Residents are urged to avoid open burning and to properly dispose of cigarettes and matches to prevent accidental fires. The dry conditions, coupled with high winds, increase the potential for fires to spread quickly and become difficult to control.

While no official burn bans have been issued, authorities recommend extreme caution when using grills, fire pits, or any equipment that generates sparks. Firefighters and emergency responders are on heightened alert due to the increased risk.

This fire risk advisory is expected to remain in effect through Friday evening. Officials encourage residents to stay informed through local weather updates and to report any signs of fire immediately.
