Indianapolis, IN – A strong cold front moving across central Indiana today will bring powerful winds, late-day rain, and a sharp temperature drop, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, south winds will strengthen through the morning and afternoon, with gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph possible across much of the region. The strongest winds are expected this afternoon, potentially making travel difficult for high-profile vehicles and blowing around unsecured outdoor objects.
Despite the wind, temperatures will surge into the 50s today, well above normal for mid-December. However, conditions will change quickly as the cold front approaches.
Forecasters say there is high confidence for rain showers developing late this afternoon into the evening, impacting the evening commute across Indianapolis, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Terre Haute, and surrounding communities. Rainfall amounts are not expected to be excessive, but wet roads combined with strong winds could create hazardous driving conditions.
Behind the front, much colder air will arrive overnight, setting the stage for a dramatically different Friday. High temperatures on Friday are expected to struggle to reach the 20s, with a sharp contrast from Thursday’s warmth. Any lingering moisture could also refreeze overnight, creating slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Residents are urged to secure loose items, use caution while driving in gusty winds, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions today into tonight.
