CHAMPAIGN, IL – The hush of new snow lingers across driveways and fields this morning as central Illinois wakes to a frozen calm. Temperatures hover near 23°F, the air still thick with the chill of a storm that blanketed parts of the region with 2 to 5 inches of snow overnight.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports that the heaviest snow has now ended, but slippery roads remain widespread across Interstates 55, 57, and 72. Plow crews continue clearing secondary routes, where slushy patches may refreeze as temperatures fall again tonight.

Drivers should expect snow-packed intersections and icy bridges, especially early in the commute. Even brief sunshine won’t bring much relief—cold northwest winds will keep “feels-like” temperatures near the low teens.

Meteorologists are already tracking a powerful Arctic front poised to push south late Wednesday. That front will send nighttime lows plunging into the single digits, with wind chills 10–15°F below zero north of I-70 by Thursday morning. By week’s end, highs may struggle to break 25°F before a modest weekend rebound.
