Lincoln, Illinois – Wind-whipped snow showers could briefly reduce visibility and create slippery travel conditions across Central Illinois on Saturday.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Central Illinois office, cloud cover will increase late tonight ahead of another frontal system moving through the region. Forecasters say snow showers are likely on Saturday, with gusty winds potentially lowering visibility over short distances, especially during heavier bursts.
The National Weather Service noted that while snowfall amounts are expected to be light, the combination of wind and falling snow could create sudden changes in driving conditions. Roads may quickly become slick, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.
Forecast graphics released Friday evening show temperatures hovering near freezing, with highs mainly in the upper 30s to lower 40s on Saturday. These marginal temperatures increase the likelihood of slushy accumulation during heavier snow showers before melting occurs.
The agency cautioned that travel impacts may be localized and brief but could catch drivers off guard, especially during early morning or afternoon travel periods. Visibility may drop sharply for short distances when snow showers pass through.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for changing road conditions. Allowing extra travel time and reducing speed during snow showers can help lower the risk of crashes.
Looking ahead, the forecast shows improving conditions late in the weekend, with quieter weather expected Sunday and into early next week.
For commuters, students, and weekend workers, Saturday travel plans may need extra caution during periods of snow showers.
