Springfield, Ill. – A dangerous stretch of heat is setting up across central Illinois this weekend, with temperatures soaring into the 90s and humidity pushing heat index values into the triple digits. The hottest day is expected Sunday, when it could feel as high as 104 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat index readings will range from 95 to 100 degrees on Saturday, climbing higher Sunday. Dewpoints in the 60s will keep conditions sticky and uncomfortable through at least Tuesday, with little chance of rainfall to provide relief.
Residents in Peoria, Springfield, and Champaign are urged to take precautions against the heat. Outdoor workers and those without air conditioning are especially at risk of heat-related illness. Officials advise limiting strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, staying hydrated, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.
Highs will remain in the mid-90s through Tuesday, with no significant cooldown expected. The weather service noted that additional advisories may be issued if heat indices climb further.
