Springfield, Illinois – A steady warmup is underway across central Illinois Sunday, setting the stage for springlike temperatures by midweek after a chilly start to January.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs Sunday will reach the upper 30s to lower 40s under mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures climb noticeably Monday, topping out near 50 degrees across much of the region, before rising into the mid to upper 50s Tuesday through Thursday. Overnight lows remain seasonable early, falling into the lower 30s Sunday night, then trend milder as the week progresses.
The warming pattern will be felt statewide, with cities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Decatur, and Champaign all seeing similar temperature increases. While clouds will be common at times, extended periods of dry weather are expected through at least midweek, allowing for favorable travel and outdoor conditions.
By Thursday into Friday, attention turns to the next weather system. Rain chances increase late week, with the potential for scattered showers as warmer air remains in place. No winter precipitation is expected during this period given the mild temperatures.
The warm stretch is expected to peak midweek before a more active pattern develops. Residents should enjoy the milder days ahead and stay alert for updated rain timing as late-week systems approach.
