Lincoln, Illinois – Storms capable of damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding are expected to develop across Illinois beginning after 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the greatest threat spreading statewide by Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a cold front moving through the region will trigger severe thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday. Wind gusts over 60 mph and quarter-size hail are the primary concerns, with the potential for isolated tornadoes and urban flooding also in the mix. The most intense activity Tuesday night is expected west of I-57, while Wednesday’s storm threat will cover a broader area.

Cities including Springfield, Peoria, and Bloomington may see hazardous travel conditions from frequent lightning and heavy downpours. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas and near small streams. Commuters should avoid driving during active storm periods, and residents are urged to secure outdoor objects and prepare for power outages.

This marks one of the most widespread severe weather threats Central Illinois has seen this June. Alerts may be expanded as conditions evolve.

Severe thunderstorm watches remain possible through Wednesday night.
