Springfield, IL – A noticeable warming trend is setting up across central Illinois this week, bringing springlike temperatures just in time for Christmas, with highs expected to climb well above seasonal averages.
According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, while today will be slightly cooler, temperatures will steadily rise through the week. Highs are forecast to reach the mid-40s to low 50s Monday, warming into the 50s and low 60s Tuesday and Wednesday, before peaking on Christmas Day with highs between 60 and 69 degrees in many areas.
Rain chances remain fairly minimal, forecasters say. A small chance of rain Monday night is expected mainly south of Interstate 70, followed by another limited rain chance Wednesday into Wednesday night, including parts of Christmas Eve. Overall precipitation amounts are expected to stay light.
Overnight lows will also trend warmer as the week progresses, rising from the low to mid-20s tonight to the upper 30s and 40s by Christmas night, reducing the risk of icy conditions.
The mild forecast may benefit holiday travel and outdoor plans across Sangamon County, McLean County, Peoria County, Champaign County, and surrounding central Illinois communities. However, residents are reminded that December weather can change quickly, and staying updated on the latest forecasts is advised.
Meteorologists note that while the warmth is notable, colder and more seasonable winter conditions could still return later in the season.
