Central Illinois – Dense fog is set to blanket east-central Illinois overnight into Monday, creating hazardous driving conditions across major roadways. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less, particularly in areas along I-74 and US-51. Drivers should exercise caution, reduce speed, and use low-beam headlights while traveling through the affected regions, including Champaign, Decatur, Effingham, and Danville. Conditions are expected to improve later in the morning as the fog dissipates.
The week ahead brings notable weather shifts for central Illinois. Patchy fog will linger into early Tuesday, but daytime temperatures will remain unseasonably mild, hovering in the mid-40s to low 50s. However, by Wednesday, a cold front will sweep through the area, dropping temperatures back below freezing. Residents can expect highs in the low 30s midweek, with overnight lows in the upper teens and potential for icy conditions on untreated roadways.
The National Weather Service advises residents to remain alert for changing weather patterns and prepare for colder conditions starting Wednesday. Light winds and clear skies later in the week could lead to frost accumulation, particularly in rural and low-lying areas.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast for central Illinois includes mostly dry conditions with occasional clouds. After Wednesday’s cold front, temperatures will gradually climb back into the 40s by the weekend, bringing some relief from the midweek chill.
Drivers and commuters should check for real-time weather updates and road conditions, especially during early morning hours when fog and freezing temperatures pose the highest risks.
