Springfield, Ill. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across central Illinois this afternoon, bringing a renewed threat of damaging wind, hail, and localized flooding through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, showers and storms that began early Tuesday will shift northward by mid-morning. A brief lull is expected midday, but forecasters warn that a second round of strong to severe storms could redevelop between 2 and 6 p.m., particularly along and north of I-74.
Cities including Bloomington, Peoria, and Champaign could see isolated wind gusts above 60 mph and brief heavy downpours, with travel delays and power outages possible. The greatest storm intensity is expected in northern counties, while areas farther south like Decatur and Taylorville may experience scattered showers with less severe activity.
Drivers are urged to monitor road conditions, especially during the evening commute, and to avoid flooded roadways. Residents should secure outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
Storm activity is expected to taper off overnight, but cooler and unsettled weather will linger through the end of the week. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
