Springfield, IL – Central Illinois could see its first measurable snowfall of the season by next weekend, according to new model guidance from the National Weather Service (NWS).

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois office, there is a 20–40% chance of more than one inch of snow developing late Friday night into Saturday morning (Nov. 29). The latest forecast suggests light snow accumulation, though confidence in totals remains relatively low at this stage.

Forecasters said patchy fog will redevelop late Sunday night, followed by light rain on Monday that will overspread the region by evening. Temperatures are expected to peak in the upper 50s to low 60s Tuesday before a sharp cold front arrives midweek, bringing wind gusts up to 40 mph and much colder air by Wednesday and Thursday.

By Saturday morning, colder air interacting with lingering moisture could bring light snow to areas including Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, and Peoria. The NWS advised residents to monitor updates as the week progresses, since even light snow could impact early holiday travel.

“This model run shows a stronger signal for light snow potential,” the agency noted Sunday afternoon. “While accumulation remains uncertain, we’ll continue to refine snowfall probabilities over the coming days.”
