Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois will remain unseasonably hot through Thursday, with highs surging into the low to mid-90s before a cooler, wetter pattern arrives by the weekend. Drivers and residents should prepare for a shift Friday when scattered showers and storms develop.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, temperatures are running 10 to 15 degrees above mid-September averages, holding near-record levels through midweek. Conditions stay dry and sunny until a slow-moving system edges into the region late Thursday night, bringing a 20 to 40 percent chance of rain Friday and Saturday.

Cities including Peoria, Bloomington, and Decatur will see highs near 90 on Thursday before dropping into the 80s Friday as clouds and humidity increase. Weekend plans may be interrupted by on-and-off storms, though widespread severe weather is not currently expected. Local farmers may welcome the rain after extended dry conditions, but travelers should be alert for wet roads and reduced visibility during downpours.

Relief arrives by Saturday night into Sunday as highs settle in the low 80s, marking a return to more seasonable conditions. Additional weather updates are expected as the storm system approaches.
