Peoria, IL – Temperatures could bring to 30°F overnight, putting early spring crops and gardens at risk across central and eastern Illinois before sunrise Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Freeze Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Tuesday morning for a large stretch of the state, including Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, and Danville. Forecasters say confidence is growing that sub-freezing temperatures will develop before daybreak, especially in rural and low-lying areas.
Communities along the I-74 and I-55 corridors, including Normal, Urbana, and Clinton, are most vulnerable to frost formation between roughly 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday. While some urban areas may stay just above freezing, outlying locations could briefly dip to or below 30°F.
The primary concern is agricultural damage, particularly to early-season crops and flowering trees. Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect exposed outdoor plumbing.
If temperatures trend colder overnight, this watch could be upgraded to a Freeze Warning. Conditions improve after mid-morning Tuesday, but additional cold alerts remain possible through midweek.
