Champaign, IL – Storms could disrupt outdoor plans Sunday afternoon as a summer weather alert goes into effect across Champaign and central Illinois. Showers and thunderstorms are possible after 1 p.m., with localized rain and lightning risks along I-74 and nearby rural routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Sunday’s high will reach 86°F under mostly sunny skies early, but clouds will increase as thunderstorm chances climb in the afternoon. Winds remain light, though any storms that develop could bring brief downpours. Sunday night should stay mostly clear, with lows around 65°F.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday bring hotter temperatures and more storm chances. Monday will be sunny and dry, with highs near 89°F. Tuesday afternoon brings a 40% chance of thunderstorms after 1 p.m., followed by another round overnight. Highs will again push toward 90°F, with warm and muggy conditions continuing.

By midweek, storm coverage increases. A 50% chance of storms is expected Wednesday into Thursday, along with humid air and persistent heat. Lows hover in the low 70s, with daily highs ranging from 85°F to 90°F.

Travelers and residents should prepare for intermittent storm delays and heat-related risks. Carry water, limit outdoor activity during peak sun, and monitor alerts through Wednesday.

Another update is expected Monday morning. Storm chances and heat persist through Thursday, July 17.
