Springfield, Illinois – Sweltering heat is pushing across central Illinois this week, with afternoon highs climbing into the mid-90s by Wednesday and Thursday before thunderstorms threaten to cool things down heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Tuesday brings a slight 20% chance of storms in west central Illinois, but the main focus will be late-week rain and possible severe weather as a front settles over the area. Widespread highs will reach 92-95°F midweek, with overnight lows staying warm in the low to mid-70s.

By Friday, storm chances increase to 40%—mainly in the afternoon—impacting cities like Springfield, Peoria, and Decatur. Scattered storms remain possible into Saturday, especially east of I-57. Travel could be affected by heavy downpours and gusty winds on both days, while outdoor activities and events may face delays or cancellations.

Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and keep pets indoors. Prepare for sudden weather changes by charging devices and reviewing severe weather plans, especially if you live in flood-prone areas.

This round of hot weather is among the highest for July so far, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as conditions develop. Stay tuned for updates as thunderstorms could impact evening plans into Saturday.
