Champaign, Ill. – Heat finally begins to ease across Illinois tonight, but scattered thunderstorms could slow morning commutes Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat indices that topped triple digits Monday will drop into the 70s overnight as storms build across central and eastern Illinois. Any storm that develops may produce frequent lightning, bursts of heavy rain, and isolated strong winds. Rain chances sit around 30 to 50 percent, with the highest threat Tuesday morning.
Drivers in Champaign, Bloomington, and Decatur should prepare for slick roads early in the day. Storms are not expected to be severe, but localized downpours may reduce visibility on interstates including I-72 and I-74. Commuters are urged to slow down on wet roads and allow extra travel time.
The pattern shifts quickly, with mostly sunny skies returning Wednesday and highs in the mid-80s. Conditions stay clear through the weekend, offering a break from both the extreme heat and storm chances.
More advisories may be issued if lightning or heavy rain lingers, but widespread severe weather is not expected.
