Springfield, Ill. – A widespread Frost Advisory is in effect from midnight through 9 a.m. Wednesday for much of central and southeast Illinois as clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to dip into the mid-30s. Sensitive vegetation will be at risk of damage overnight, with a stronger cold push expected to follow Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, areas from Peoria and Springfield south toward Effingham and Lawrenceville are most likely to see frost formation, with localized readings as low as 33°F in sheltered valleys. Another round of colder air late Thursday could bring near-freezing temperatures to portions of east-central Illinois.

Residents are urged to protect tender outdoor plants by covering them or bringing them indoors and to disconnect garden hoses to prevent damage. Garden centers, vineyards, and local growers should prepare for the possibility of two consecutive frost nights before slightly milder air returns heading into the weekend.

The advisory includes all of central and southeast Illinois, with conditions improving after sunrise Wednesday as winds increase and temperatures rebound into the upper 50s.
