Urbana, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms are slamming east-central Illinois Friday evening, bringing 70 mph wind gusts, nickel-sized hail, and blowing dust that could reduce visibility to near zero.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 5:45 p.m. for Champaign, Vermilion, Edgar, and Douglas counties. Radar showed a fast-moving storm line stretching from Urbana to Oakwood, tracking northeast at 35 mph.
Drivers on Interstates 57, 72, and 74 should use extreme caution, particularly near Urbana, Rantoul, and Hoopeston, where wind damage and poor visibility could make travel dangerous. Tree damage and structural impacts to roofs, mobile homes, and outbuildings are likely.
Communities including Thomasboro, Potomac, and Rossville are in the storm’s direct path. Power outages and road debris may follow as the line moves through. A Tornado Watch also remains in effect across the region until 10 p.m.
Residents should move to the lowest interior level of sturdy buildings and avoid unnecessary travel until the storm clears. Additional warnings are possible into the evening as the severe threat continues.
