Champaign, Illinois – A prolonged period of cooler weather is settling over Illinois, bringing a significant temperature drop for the final weekend of August. The shift will see high temperatures struggle to climb out of the 60s for Chicago and much of the state, a stark change from the recent heat.

According to the National Weather Service, this cooler airmass will remain in place through at least the weekend and into Labor Day on Monday. Highs will only reach the mid-60s for much of the Chicago metro area, with overnight lows in the low 50s. Farther south in central Illinois, including cities like Champaign, highs will be slightly warmer, reaching the low 80s with lows in the mid-50s. The entire state will experience partly sunny skies with a chance of showers by Wednesday afternoon.

Drivers in the northern part of the state should prepare for cooler morning commutes with the risk of reduced visibility from fog, especially in low-lying areas. The cool, stable conditions mean that the risk of severe weather is minimal across the state, with only a slight chance of showers moving in from the west by mid-week.

This pattern is likely to remain in place through the middle of next week, and residents should plan for jacket weather through Labor Day. The National Weather Service will issue updates as the system progresses.
