SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A quick burst of wintry weather may greet parts of central Illinois early Sunday as a fall storm system brings colder air and the chance for light snow or a wintry mix north of Interstate 74.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, rain is expected to develop Saturday night ahead of a strong cold front, then transition to snow or a brief mix as temperatures tumble before daybreak Sunday. The best chance for a dusting of snow—around 20 to 30 percent—will be near and north of I-74, including Bloomington, Peoria, and Danville. Farther south toward Springfield and Decatur, precipitation should end mostly as rain.
Forecasters emphasize that significant uncertainty remains regarding the storm’s exact track and strength, which will determine how much of the region sees snowflakes versus rain. Any accumulation should remain light, mainly on grassy or elevated surfaces, with travel impacts limited. However, gusty northwest winds and sharply colder air will make Sunday feel like the first true taste of winter across central Illinois.
Residents are advised to monitor updates from the National Weather Service for changes in timing and precipitation type. Even minor snow or icy spots could affect early Sunday travel and morning outdoor plans.
