Lincoln, IL – Gusty winds and rapidly changing weather conditions are expected to impact central Illinois today and tonight as a strong cold front moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, strong south winds will affect the area this morning before shifting to the west this afternoon and evening behind the cold front. Wind gusts may create difficult driving conditions for high-profile vehicles and could blow around unsecured, lightweight objects, including holiday decorations.
Forecasters say widespread rain showers are expected today along the front. As colder air rushes in this evening, scattered snow showers may develop across parts of central Illinois. While snow accumulations are expected to remain minor—generally less than one inch, the combination of falling temperatures and strong winds could result in slippery road conditions and reduced visibility.
The highest travel impacts are expected between 5 p.m. and midnight, when temperatures drop below freezing and rain or snow may freeze on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Even brief snow showers could quickly change driving conditions.
Communities potentially impacted include Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, Galesburg, Jacksonville, Danville, and surrounding areas.
The National Weather Service urges drivers to use extra caution, slow down during snow showers, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Residents are also encouraged to secure loose outdoor items ahead of the strongest winds.
Temperatures are expected to turn sharply colder tonight into Friday, with wind chills dropping into the single digits and teens, before moderating again over the weekend.
